Mr. Seabrook Goes to Haiti

“Mr. Seabrook Goes to Haiti, or Southern (Self-)Mastery in The Magic Island (1929).” Southern Quarterly, 55.4 (2018): 53-69. (Co-authored with Emily Taylor.)

The article examines the life and works of author and explorer William Buehler Seabrook, particularly his 1929 book on the pseudo-ethnographic exploration of Vodou practices in Haiti titled “The Magic Island” and the ways in which Seabrook’s identity as a white Southerner influenced his representation of Haiti.
